You can sort of train them - establish a routine, they'll stick to it and get pissed if you deviate.

We had a very vocal tom cat when I was a kid. I'd hear him "talking" to my mom every morning when she'd get up to make my dad's breakfast. It was kind of hilarious how excited he'd get because someone got up and all the funny vocalizations he'd make.

Kinda, but you can definitely train a cat. But most people expect dog level of obedience/training when you mention training at all, which is giving wholly unrealistic expectations.
My cats never jump up on counters, they're trained. My cats do not claw furniture, they're trained. One of my cats, which is part Maine my excellent compatriot, comes when called and a few other simple commands, esp. when she's out with our dogs. We call her the "fourth" dog she acts like one so much of the time. Of course, it helped she was raised with dogs. One of my sisters bred and showed Persians. She got every cat she had over a couple of decades to actually want a bath.
True, you most likely won't get cats to fetch, roll over, and more typical dog tricks, but why would they? Cats aren't pack animals like dogs, which removes the "need" to please like dogs have.
