i have an old compaq that i tinker with when i'm bored, and today after some tinkering it won't post. it won't even get the "compaq" splash screen that it shows when initially powered up.

in hindsight i may have scratched it but i took a good look but didn't see any scratches or any other physical damage.

so how can i check to see if it's the mobo that's dead? keep in mind that i don't have any electrical tools, but i'm willing to try and magyver things.
i know it's not a dead processor, and i'm fairly certain the power supply isn't dead/dying.

TIA

if you hear your psu running, try another cpu. also, you might want to try a different stick of ram. remember, bad ram, no boot.

well i've had a dead cpu before and this is different, with a dead cpu it'll hang when it tries to load windows. now it doesn't even get that far.
also checked the ram, still a no go. looks like i better start looking for a mobo.

yeah, you could be right. sounds like your board is shorting out somewhere. well, good luck to you.
