How can i tell what add-on(s) are crashing my Firefox

Firefox crashes on me every 5-10 minutes on average. Sometimes it might go a half hour, but sometimes it will crash three times in 30 seconds. I have 23 add-ons installed, half of which are just tool bar buttons, stuff like firebug, clear cache, and stuff like that. I have probably another 20 add-ons installed but disabled that I have played around with, but don't really need.

Is there any way other that uninstalling everything and reinstalling them one or two per day over the next month, that I can figure out which one is crashing it? Most of them are recommended or highly downloaded.

Also, what about the disabled ones? Could they be crashing the system because they are installed, even though they are disabled? Would I need to fully uninstall them to find out what is the problem? It would help to know if disabled add-ons can crash a system.

This is seriously annoying. There are certain add-ons I don't want to go back to living without, but I can't keep living with a browser that crashes on me constantly.

It is not a add on that is causing your firefox to crash. The sooner people realize that the better off we all will be. I can duplicate the same kind of crashes you are having with firefox with no add ons installed.

If a add on was the problem the situation would of been fixed long ago.

Then what would it be?

Firefox itself is stable so the only other thing I can think of is the user... 😉

Disable(not uninstall) all of your addons, then start re-enabling them with a testing period to make sure it's stable.

I get crashes too every once in a while. I used to get them a lot, but now I barely get any, if any in the past 2 weeks or so.

Try running Firefox in Safe Mode. If it still crashes, then it's the program itself. I used to get crashes in Safe Mode and I just sucked it up and waited for it to be fixed.

Either it's a bad profile file, bad add-on/plugin, or browser bug.

Trial and error will determine which one is the winner.

If you have so many add-ons, then a more efficient way is to eliminate half at a time rather than one by one.

Is actually easy to diagnose Firefox, especially if you have done it 50 times before 😉 http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox

New profile, avoiding known conflicts will often help.

Crashfiles, those you might have submitted - type about:crashes can be read though I have no clue how http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad

Can make lists of add-ons including plugins with this https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3746 - or make a "collection" with public link at add-on site. You will have to sign up for that.

Could be a build-in bug but unlikely. Same with IE 🙂 However, one of the fixed bugs in 3.5.2 was something about slow startup due to IE temp files - much is possible but look closely at that diagnostic page.

They keep a list of problematic extensions http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions and even Firewalls http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls and sometimes they mention bad ram chips could cause problems! Goes on and on... I doubt those lists are updated or cover all issues btw. Also search userforum http://forums.mozillazine.org/ someone else will have similar problem.

Safe mode will exclude Add-ons but not plugins. Guess also not possible conflicts with other programs.

Few add-ons can make Firefox crash even if disabled so you are right with that worry. Think it is rare. Ive seen it once with Greasemonkey - my bank site would crash if not completely uninstalled. Was "reproducible" which is keyword - like pic or it did not happen 🙂 Very weird. Was 2 years ago, probably does not make sense today. Not sure if Cooliris have had same "feature" long time ago, has been a crashhappy addon until they got it somewhat stable. Now it just eats memory 😉 You can probably find a handful of critical add-ons, Firebug also among them - even more so with older version. I remember conflicts with Adblock Plus. Your setup has a life of its own so to speak...
