How can I tell if my usb port is messed up?

Hi all, I have a Toshiba M40 Satellite notebook, it has three usb ports and lately I've noticed that if I have my mouse plugged into the port on the very rear right, windows makes the noise it usually makes when something is being connected and disconnected, but so far with the mouse plugged into the alternate port on the right side I haven't noticed it doing that. Any suggestion? Oh I also tried uninstalling the mouse and letting it reinstall, I must also note that I still have the touchpad enabled too.

I find Windows a little picky about which port gets the mouse. Once it has been connected to one USB port, Windows does not like to recognize the mouse when you connect it to a different one.

Also, have you tried other devices on those other 2 USB ports to see if those devices work?

No, I have been using the mouse on the 3rd port since I made this post, I'll have to figure out what I can use on the first port to see if it's messed up or not.

Do you have a printer, external hard drive, usb key, etc to plug in?
