I am building a new pc for an uncle, asus a7v133, new case/power supply.. it wont turn on. the power switch it plugged into the right pins, the power supply is powered from the wall, the voltage is correct, the master switch is on, the motherboard has the power cable plugged into it, I've built dozens of pc's before just fine, whats the deal with this one? how can I tell if its the motherobard, power supply, or power switch thats the culprit?

how can I tell if an ATX power supply is dead, without just trying a bunch of motherboards with it?

Assuming you have a spare lying around... I would just substitute a known-working one in your new system - if it works, then the one you removed is probably defective.

Check the voltage selector switch on the back of the PS. should be near the power cord, be sure it is set to 115V.

I heard that you can turn the PSU on by momentarily shorting purple and black ones.. or was it green and black.. hmm.. don't know.
Or you can use the PSU tester.. which you may need to buy

RossGr has the idea. A lot of people don't bother to check the slider on the back of the PSU to select the right voltage as if 110V is the standard in the whole wide world. Believe or not we are a minority compare to the number of countries using the 220-240V standard.
