How can I tell if my CPU is done for?

Im trying to build a system and tried 2 brand new mobos, ECS K7S5A, and an Epox 8K5A2+. Neither board seems to POST. Ive tried different AGP and PCI cards, and the PSU and stick of 256MB PC2700 RAM is also brand new. The HD is Maxtor 40GB and theres also a 16x DVD-ROM.

I find it highly unlikely that I got 2 brand new, but DOA boards, so maybe the CPU is defective. I inspected the CPU and theres no cracks on it or any other deformities that I can see.

I considered doing that, buying an XP 1700+ to see if that solves the problem. My only concern is that something might be wrong with the mobos and they might destroy the new CPU also. Ive emailed Epox about the problem, so I'm gonna see what their take on this is.

What about the RAM?

that was brand new also. Wouldnt the system beep or something if the RAM stick was bad? I dont get any beeps whatsoever

How many sticks did you get? Try messing around with the combonations. Try using one stick at a time.

Hmm...how about the PSU?

I only have 1 stick of it. The PSU is also a brand new Antec 350W or 400W.

I've had bad luck with those ECS K7S5A boards. Just make sure the Mobo revision is 3 or higher. The revision 2 was a buggy nightmare

Ive tried both the Epox and the ECS to build this system. My main system right now is based on a K7S5A...🙂
