How Can I Tell If I Fried My CPU?

I installed a Slot 1 1Ghz P3 and tried to boot several times before I realized there was a small gap between the cheapie heatsink and
the cpu. I though I had fixed it with by installing a thermal shim and the CPU is now recognized properly and the machine boots up and works fine to surf the net, etc.., but when I try any graphics intensive test (3DMark2001SE or Dronezmark) the machine locks up almost immediately. The machine works fine with my Celery300@450. So, I am assuming the CPU is fine but is getting too hot when I start up 3DMark and I need to get a better heatsink/fan (was thinking of getting a Golden Orb since I have a windowed case). Does this sound correct to you all??

Mobo is Abit BH6 Rev 1.0.

If is still boots and runs, it's not fried but locking up is a sign of too high of temps. Got an actual temp reading?

Is there any thermal paste on it? A thermal shim would not help your heatsink touch the cpu itself, it would only act as a poor conductor from the heatsink to the processor. Try removing the shim and finding a way to make the heatsink make good contact with the cpu..

the only thing that should go between the cpu and the heatsink is a thin layer of thermal paste, and it should always be used. artic silver is the most preferred paste.

/edit...why would a heatsink not sit flush on the cpu? there's such a small contact area, but if it doesn't somehow, you need another heatsink.

The cheapie heatsink I bought does not sit flush on the cpu. After studying the setup a bit I noticed the heatsink rode on the small plastic pins/tabs on the P3. So I ground the tabs down a bit and reinstalled the heatsink with some Arctic Silver, everything seems to be running fine now. I think I will order a Golden Orb for it anyway, it will look cool in the windowed case. Thanks for your replies.

Sounds like you are trying to use an Celeron SLot1 cooling unit on an SECC2 processor. This won't work. The locks are temp related, and the PC won't be stable until you get the correct CPU/Fan unit.
