How can I tell if DIMM slot is bad?

I have two DIMM slots. Slot 0 has 512MB of PC2700. Just got new Crucial memory, 512MB PC3200 for slot 1. Installed, still shows 512MB memory. Switched memory around, still 512MB, but it said it was PC3200. Put old, then new memory into slot 1, both times the PC wouldn't start up. Does this mean slot 1 slot is bad? Could it be something else? The BIOS? Me not happy 🙁

Thanks

Some chipsets, particularly those with integrated graphics, don't fire up at all with the 1st DIMM slot empty (slot 0 in yours).
