How can I tell if AVG virus protection is working?

I started using AVG's free virus protection several months ago after it was recommended by many on this board. It seems to be running properly and I update it regularly. Under the Resident Shield tab and the E-mail Scanner tab all are checked which indicates that it's operating. The problem is that I haven't had ONE single virus come in any email since I started using this program. I have received many emails from a person I now who keeps sending out viruses and my computer at office catches the viruses all the time using Norton. But here at home the emails come and go w/ no warning. Is it possible that Roadrunner is stripping out the virus before sending it on to me? I'd love to be able to find some sort of virus that isn't harmful that I could send to myself and see if AVG catches it...does this make sense?
