My friend has a weird way of telling if a watermelon is ripe; he checks the colors then taps on the watermelon, if it sounds soft it's ripe, if it's still solid, then it's not ripe yet. I dunno if it's a surefire way but he seems happy with it...

Slap the melon, if you feel it echo internally, its ready. If you slap it and it shatters ... well, you got an overripe melon there.

Throw it off a balcony. If it splits into a million pieces, it is ripe. If it splits into a few pieces, it isn't.

If the rind is hard, the bottom has a buttery colored patch on it, it's an even shape (no crazy shapes), and it's heavy for it's size.

My grandma always told me that if you knock on the watermelon and it sounds hollow then its ripe. Never had a non ripened watermelon when she did the picking.

Knock on it. If it sounds hollow, it's good to go. I think...

I used to work with some guys from Fiji, who recommended:

take melons, cut out a piece, fill with booze, cap w/piece, wrap with duct tape & bury for a month or more. Then, it's time for good eatin' (or drinkin'?)!

Never did try it though - I'm a bit afraid - especially after that other post.
