How can I tell if a computer has been hacked?

A friend is on cable modem. She says that all of her data files in MyDocuments are gone, and now gets an error msg that say for her to reinstall Windows. Her machine is running w2k.

Any programs to tell if she's been hacked? any any programs that can scan the machine for vunabilities?

i knew a guy who would pick random IPs within his mask and start putting txt files on the desktop like "j00 been h4X0rd!"
