How can I tell how big a TV really is from a spec sheet?

I have a built-in entertainment center cabinet with space for a tv about 49 inches square and about 40" deep. I'm looking around for a HDTV and when I see on the spec sheet the item dimentions, are these the outer dimensions?

example 39x41x20.6 here I assume they are outer dimensions but trying to make sure without actually going to the store 🙂

and anyone want to reccomend a tv that fits in my dimensions. H 48, W 49, Depth ~40 (tapers back). The one linked above seems to be pretty good. Checked out avsforum also.
