some online sources say to use group policy editor but home premium doesn't have that.

from the control panel -> windows defender I disabled it from starting but then somehow windows adds another entry for it. I even tried to rename the exe file. but even though i'm an administrator on my own machine i'm not allowed to do that :|

anyone know a workaround?

You must be looking at some shitty sources then cause all the sources I'm looking at tell me it's part of Microsoft Media Center.
Also why are you trying to disable windows defender?

Defender has a control panel that lists what starts up and you can enable/disable.
Ehtray controls the MCE remote. I want to use other software with it. It was easy to disable in MCE2005 (it was a service).

Start > Run > Msconfig > either startup or services tab? I would assume this is still in vista...

Press Start and type "Local". Does "Local Security Policy" show up as one of the options? If yes, I'll give you more instructions.
