How can I see if my microphone works

I have a microphone that has one connection but isnt color coated and I want to know which color on the back of my soundblaster live 5.1 do I connect it to? Also I want to know where can I test it.

Try the test hardware button under voice in sound properties (assuming your using XP)

Plug mic in, turn speakers up to 100%, hold mic in front of speakers, uncheck mic mute in the volume controlls, wait for the magic
