I seen this being done on Windows in my computer lab. Long story short...

- There is a computer lab at our campus which uses the Solaris OS for us to program in.

- I've seen computers running / simulating what you can see on those computers in their Microsoft Windows.

- I'm at the computer right now, but can't seem to figure it out.. and it'll be even better if I can do this at home. I'm seeing folders like X-Windows, Exceed, and something about SSH.

Does anybody know what exactly I need to be able to run the Solaris OS at my home Microsoft Windows? Thanks for any tips!

They have a solaris server they are not running the program on the machine your looking at . Exceed is a terminal program that gives you a 'look' at what the solaris server is doing. . .

If your school's lab has a Solaris server that's not behind a firewall, you could telnet to it (or use ssh) and utilize the power of Solaris remotely. I know my school's Unix servers were behind firewalls for security concerns, so we had no remote access:frown: The software your referring to is probably VMWare: it'll allow you to run a virtual machine under Windows. Don't know if it'll run Solaris, tho, and it's pricey (plus you'll need Solaris.) Bottom line, if you can't telnet to your school's servers, and you don't wanna spend the $$, you'll be spending a lot of time in the lab.

YOu need an X-Terminal emulator. What computer are you at right now that has an Exceed folder? Exceed should work.
Basically, this program allows the X-Windows environment of Solaris to be emulated in a windows environment.

There used to be a freeware one called Mi|X but I think they started charging for it.

As long as Exceed is configured right (and you actually have it) you should be able to just give the remote host name and come up with a login screen.

If you want to run X terminal emulation for a demanding graphical application such as CAD/FEM on remote machines, you'd better be on at least cable modem.
