How can I restrict instant messaging?

I don't want instant messages to go outside of the company. Are there any IM clients that support this, or any plug-ins I can install with Miranda? I'd like to restrict access to the contact list, so that users can't add contacts without permission, or something similar.

Block whatever ports it uses for incoming/outgoing at the WAN level.

um unless hes using an internal chat server that would block even the company messages since they have to be sent out to aol/icq whatever servers to get messages back and forth. they would never be able to log on...

the only way that i know of doing this is to setup your own internal chat/messenger server

bunch of jabber products out there or you can buy into MS live communications server if you have barrells of cash. best thing with the commercial jabber products is that they can support logging every single message. Don't think OS jabber does this.

Jabber would probably be best. Another solution is Sametime.

Use Live Communications Server instead. It's very secure and provides the archiving necessary to maintain SOX legal compliance.

It still allows access to AOL, MSN, Yahoo! if needed but can be configured on a user by user basis. Unlike consumer connections to these IM services, LCS does so securely and with admin control.

It also offers the features your users really want: app sharing, whiteboarding. Audio/Video, data transfer, group IM etc.
