I have a macbook pro that was formatted and had windows installed.

I now want to reformat it and install lion. I know I bought the upgrade from the apple store, but have no idea where the DVD is.

How can I redownload lion without osx?

Ok... I am booted into 10.7 and logged in.

This thing doesn't have a recovery partition so I need to download the .dmg file.

The app store says "We could not complete your purchase. OS X 10.7 is already installed on this computer. Are you sure you want to download it?"

I click OK, and it takes me right back to the same app store screen without starting the download.

I have holding down the option button when clicking install and when opening the app store.

Very frustrating.

Search your disk for the file. I vaguely recall that happening to me and it downloaded the file to some odd location and never told me.

I tried searching "all my files" for dmg and disk image... No luck. But it doesn't even really seem to start searching.

I'm giving the macbook away and want to wipe all of my stuff off of it.

oh so you're saying it is dual boot with windows and osx? i was thinking it was windows and you formatted it to 10.7 and were asking about lion.

if you have it in your history, you could always do a fresh install of 10.6, then update to the latest 10.6.8, then download the 10.7 from your account history.

would that work?

It is dual boot with windows and osx, no recovery partition.

I am booted into 10.7 and just want to format the thing. Trying not to hate on apple, but this is an insane amount of screwing with stuff just to accomplish that.

I do have my 10.6 install discs, but would rather not install 10.6 then upgrade to 10.7... Just doesn't seem very clean.

Ok, if you didn't have your Windows disk, how would you accomplish this on a PC?

Usually holding Option will let you download the DMG... maybe try logging out of the App Store and then back in, or under a different user account?

I would download an image. Very simple.

I've tried holding option, logging out and in. I'll try creating a new user account.

Created a new admin user, same exact problem. This is ridiculous. I'm just going to format, install 10.6, download 10.7, and try to upgrade the brand new install.

I am not a Mac User but I always thought that with Macs reinstalling the OS was a breeze you just hold some sort of key combination during boot up and it boots into recovery mode, downloads the OS and install it?

correct me if Im wrong please

That's a weird issue that you're having then, sucks that it's being such a pain in teh ass.

Newer Macs have Internet Recovery. The OP said that he had deleted the recovery partition on this one.

You are wrong. I hold down command key + R and it just boots from the DVD. I can't get the DVD to eject via command+f5 either. Very frustrating.

I give up.

I'm restoring it to 10.6 (thankfully I kept those DVDs even after purchasing 10.7!!)

I will then download and upgrade to 10.7.

And then boot into the recovery partition and do a clean 10.7 install.

Seriously annoyed. They should have had a better system for this. I'm just a naive mac user geez.

Isn't the 10.7 license you bought tied to your Apple ID? Can you resell it with the laptop?

Being a not-naive Mac User, I archived the InstallESD.dmg file before I upgraded. Live 'n learn.

I have learned this with ALL apple products... You have to secretly save the stupid ssh blobs or whatever for ipads/iphones as well, since they often cripple older devices with newer upgrades. I guess the same is true for their computer products. It's so frustrating since they market themselves as this super easy to use trouble free platform.....

I believe it is tied with my apple ID, but if I can get 10.7 on it with a recovery partition they should be fine barring some major hardware failure.

Aaaaaand I get the 1.3gb of updates installed just to get the app store.

Hold down option, click on app store.

Hold down option, click on purchased.

Hold down option, click 'download' beside OS X Lion

I get the spinning wheel for 3 seconds and nothing happens.

This is ridiculous.

I just bought mountain lion as a workaround, after wasting 4 hours trying to get this update that I already own downloaded.

...4GB files take longer than 4 minutes to download?

Not following. Just remember to extract the InstallESD.dmg file from the Installer app and stash it somewhere.

Alright.

Rebooted, signed out/in to app store, and now mountain lion is downloading.

And so is lion.

Both are 'stuck' with no progress.

This is borderline hilarious.

It wasn't downloading at all, it was stuck on 'waiting'.

I was able to cancel the lion download, although the icon won't go away.

Mountain line is downloading, as far as I can tell with a 1/2" long progress bar.

After the fiascos I've had with other apple updates I will most definitely be saving that dmg file.
