How can I partition my laptop without erase pre-installed programs?

Hello. guys!

I just bought a HP laptop (ze4325us, Windows XP Home Edition, 40Gb hard, 1.67Ghz Athlon, 256Mb Ram...).
And I wanted to partition hard drive into C and D, so I erased partition C, and created C and D half and half.
Then I installed Windows XP Home edition, and tried to install drivers and pre-installed programs manually.
But the problem is that this laptop just came with System Recovery CDs (4 CDs) and Operation System CD (Windows XP), so I could not install not only audio, video, lan card drivers, but also the programs that were pre-installed.
So I ran System Recovery CDs. After that, the partitioned hard drive (C and D) became just one partition (C).

Is it possible to partition without deleting pre-installed programs?
I don't have a floppy drive in the laptop. It just has CDRW/DVD combo.

Thanks ahead!

use the restore cd's and then use partition magic. i have not had any problems with it (knock on wood).
