NETWORKING

Easily connects to others in your network.
Thanks to their network capability (standard on the MFC-8840DN and optional
on the MFC-8440 and MFC-8840D models), you can share printing, faxing, and
scanning functions with others on your network. This feature provides a variety of
LAN networking solutions including Internet Fax, Network Printing, Direct Network
Scanning, Network Scanning via E-mail, Network Faxing, and Web-based
Management Utilities3.
Allows copying
or scanning
from document

I wonder if they connect the 8440 directly to a printer on the network if the remote, wireless laptop can use all 4 of the Brother's 4 features.

Man, that's what happens when I pull an all nighter.
Correction:

Well, I just setup an MFC-5440 on my home network. Although I haven't tried to scan or fax from another PC, that's what the owners manual claims it can do. Maybe I'll work on that this afternoon.

I am using an earlier model of a similar Brothers All in One.

When you install the printer you have to install the printer?s special drivers on all Network Computers. Once you install it you can Scan, Print, Fax, Copy, and what ever else the printer can do.

If connected directly to a computer as a printer, it probably would work as a printer only since Fax and Scanner are Not sharable devices through Windows regular setting.

Would they need to run a Windows Server OS?

No any Windows OS above Win98 would do.

The printer need to be connected with CAT5e to an availble port on the Cable/DSL Router.
