How can i make my website more "sticky"

Train

Lifer
ive been looking at the live stats program on my webserver, it shows user activity by session. It seems a large percentage of my visitors just load the homepage and thats it.

I have dynamic content, an interactive poll, and lots of links on my home page, what gives? is there a secret to get visitors in the mood to "look around"?

my website: http://www.ohiorunner.com

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the layout and it seems very cluttered and chaotic. I'm no designer so I couldn't give you any useful advice, but maybe try looking at other websites for design ideas?

Well, polls and interactive stuff work only if the person is interested in the related material. The design does seem cluttered forcing me to scan through the page to find the things. I noticed that most of your links lead to other websites or a calender page. Simple things like an image gallery or articles should keep the visitor for a short period.

Less is more!

To get people to click around, you have to give them something they want to look at. Make the important stuff stand out and easy to find and navigate.

When I arrive at your website one of the first things I see is an oversized advertising banner that takes up 1/4 of my screen. That won't help anything. Remember a large number of your potential visitors are using 640x480 or 800x600.

It would be nice to see Recent News listed in place of the Runners World magazine advert. People shouldn't need to scroll down so much to see a main feature of the website like this one.

Who is your audience for this website? Is it 1. Runners everywhere , 2. Runners in Ohio, or 3. Everyone in Ohio.
Target your content to the audience you pick - from what I can tell this website is targetted to Runners in Ohio and nobody Else. If you want it targeted to Runners everywhere , then add some general information about running, techniques, latest trends, FAQ, discussion, world/USA running news, etc.

If you really are just targetting Ohio Runners, then you have most things covered - do you know how many visitors you have per day or per week?

i guess the clutter would be the main problem, most of the design was added piece by piece. Ive been meaning to reorganize the layout for a while.

Good idea about shrinking the banner.

I currently get about 100-150 page views a day.

Is it 150 page views or 150 seperate visitors/ip addresses?

I have the same problem as you, often people will load the first page then just go to a different site, people will go to your site and not see what they want, or they may have wound up at the wrong spot entirely.

Maybe you can put your advertising at hte bottom of the page.
