How can I make my fan stop rattling?

I have one fan in my house (in my office) that is a little bit noisy because it seems to be a little bit off balanced. It has five lights with glass around them, so it jiggles now and then and it is annoying.

I've never had to balance a fan, but I've installed at least five or so... can anyone clue me in on this? Is it just trial and error or...?

Thanks!

You can balance them. Go to homedepot, tell them what's going on. They'll point you in the right direction. Balancing should take 5 or 10 minutes and is really simple.

Ha. This one isn't old, it was just unbalanced ever since I added the lights onto it.

I was just curious if anyone knew the process off the top of their head or could point me to directions online. I think it comes with the stuff to balance it already. I just can't wrap my head around how it would be done.

fixed.

Or you could just buy a some adhesive balancing weights at Home Depot, and spend about 5 minutes. The kit should come with a clip that you try on each fan blade one at a time, running the fan on high to see which clip position wobbles the least. The clip weighs the same as the wieghts that are included, so you just stick the weight to the top of the blade that needed the adjustment. Sometimes you'll have to weight more than one blade, but usually, one wight will do.

Check to make sure blades are tight.
If lights are adjustable, spread them out to balance the weight.
Check to see that fan is securely fastened to electrical box.
As previously mentioned, balance kits are available.
