How can I make DHCP work with a bridge and ethernet over 1394?

Ok, I have these connections:
XP Pro Box connected via 10M Ethernet to larger LAN
XP Pro Laptop connected via Firewire using the built-in XP Ethernet over 1394 drivers

I bridged the 10B-T LAN to firewire on the desktop using the XP network bridge tool, and the desktop still connects perfectly to the LAN (it gets its IP via DHCP).

I connected the laptop via firewire and manually set an IP that I know is compatible with the LAN - laptop works perfectly on the LAN.

The problem is, the LAN I'm running on doesn't want me accessing w/ a static IP, and when I switch the laptop over to DHCP, it isn't assigned an IP address.

I tried troubleshooting using Network Probe Lite, but it doesn't seem to work on Firewire networks...

I get conflicting reports as to wether or not DHCP works on firewire networks or over XP Bridges - anyone know how I can fix this?

not what you're looking for, sorry, but you could make the desktop not bridge, but route to an internal network (consisting of the desktop and laptop). That way your laptop uses your desktop for a gateway...

I considered doing that, but the LAN administrators don't want me doing it... I might do it anyway, but I'd rather try to get the bridge working first...
