I have a second computer that I would like to use as a server/router for my cable internet connection. My friend suggested that I use two network cards in the one computer. But my question is where do I go from that. If you have any suggestions that would be great.

If you're more comfortable with a windows enviorment then you can get a copy of win2000 from a friend and use the built in router software. Not ICS, an actual router that can do packet filtering.

I mean, I personally think the hardware router option is the best and linux or some variation is a close runner up, but some folks know windows and are comfortable with it and don't want to play with something new.

Just thought I'd mention that you do have that option.

If just don't have a copy of W2k, or don't want to setup linux, you can try winroute.
I used it till I got a hardware router, winroute works very will it does dhcp, and proxy as well..

FreeSCO is a a cinch to setup on a floppy disk.

SmoothWall even easyer to setup if you have a spare hdd, and it comes with loads of eyes candies (GUI).

White Glove Linux, eh?

Sounds interesting. Kinda similar to QNX.

I think I may have to try that...

Clark Connect seemed to be a minimalist distor that include full packages of mail & web server. It look like a similar distro to Trustix & other minimalist distros. If you want an absolute control over your OS with the easy of pre package tools, then IMHO Debian is the best (most stable) distro out there.

I tried a bunch of Linux router packages ,and This is the one I stayed with.....works great . The new ver is even easier to setup. Give it a try if you have a couple nics that are supported.
