How can I link two receivers to power several speakers?

My main receiver is a Denon 1603, but I'd like to link up an old Kenwood "basic stereo receiver" to power some outdoor speakers. I tried running the "VCR out" on the Denon to the AUX input on the Kenwood (and telling the Denon that the optical 1 input from my HTPC = "VCR") but no go.

Basically, I just want the extra receiver to play music currently being played by the Denon. Suggestions? Two sound cards in the HTPC?

doesnt the denon have an A/B switch?

If not run the audio output from whatever it is you want to run to an input on denon that has has an audio out. Run that audio out to an input on the kenwood.

I really think the denon probably has an A/B switch though.

It does have an A/B, but I don't want to use it for the outdoor speakers (the B channel is already being used for my "listening" speakers in the living room).

The main thing I want to output is my HTPC (all my music is there) but I need it to go to all speakers, indoor and out, at once for parties and such. Hence, the two recievers.

ahh...then why not just split the rca's coming out of your HTPC and run them to both receivers? That would be about a $5 fix.

Because I have an optical cable coming from the HTPC since I use it for DVD playback as well as music stuff.

jeebus man...you just have to make things difficult. I doubt that receiver will knock down optical to RCA....let me look and see if I can find anything to help.

Two sound cards isn't an option? I have an extra SB Live! lying around.

you could buy a cheap pre-amp. but i dont think that would really work to wel since you dont want to spend the money.

Get a Y cable that splits the one RCA output from your source into two RCA inputs for the two receivers.

Again, I'm using the digital output from my sound card so that's not an option.

Use the analog output for the basic reciever then. The sound card should output on both channels at once.

Really? I thought they just spit out on whatever you told them to. Worth a shot, I suppose.

It probably varies by sound device, but my motherboard (nForce 2 Soundstorm) does indeed output through both the digital and analog ports/jacks at the same time.

use the pre-outs to the kenwood tape in.

The 1803 might have multi-zone as well.

If you're using a tape-out on the receiver you'll have to set the record source of you PC to get it to output. Remember tapes? You have to specify what source to record (which is not necessarily the source you are listening to at the time. This is the source that is output to the tape loop (the audio in/out)

all fixed.

Wow. It worked. The sound card is set to SPDIF, but the other outputs are apparently still live. I now have DJ Krush playing all over my house, including the back porch. :D
