How can I hook this DVD player up to this TV?

My sister's roommate just bought a nice DVD player, so my sister sent hers home to me, and gave me permission to use it and everything. I'd really like to hook it up to this old TV in my room, but I'm oblivious as to how. The TV doesn't have those standard yellow, white, and red plugs or whatever on the back, it's this old mono thing. I had a playstation hooked up to it with no problem, I just had to use an RF adapter. Could that be possible with the DVD player as well? Here's sort of a layout of the back of the DVD player. Unfortunately, she didn't send any cables with it, so I'll have to make a trip to Radio Shack if I can figure out a way to do this. Whenever I list just a color, it means the plug on the back (same size as the aforementioned standard yellow, red, and white plugs on most TVs) is of that color. If a word is in quotes, like the coaxial under Digital Audio Out, then that means the word is physically printed above the plug :

Digital Audio Out------------------Audio Out----------------------Video Out-----------------Component Video Out

"Coaxial"------------------------(White)--------------------------(yellow)---------------------reen) "Y"
(Pink)------------------------------------(red)-------------------Coaxial (an actual coaxial--------(Blue)---"CB"
---------------------------------------------------------------------port, not the printed word)------(Red)---"CR"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------"S-Video"---------------------------

Hopefully this "schematic" makes sense. It's odd how the word Coxial is printed above a regular plug, but then there's an actual coaxial port in a completely different spot on the back. So, how would I go about hooking this up to a TV without those red, yellow and white plugs on the back?

Thank you so much guys!

<------First post in awhile, man I've been busy.

Yes, the adapter will work. I went through this when I had my crappy old 19" GE.

Sorry, but it doesn't make sense.

:p

What DVD player do you have?

What inputs does your TV have? I'm presuming just coax.

You'll likely need an RF adapter.

Cool, but what exactly do I need to hook up? It's great to hear that I can use an RF adapter, can I just use the same one I used with the playstation? What should I run from what in the back into what on the adapter?

<-----is an idiot about technology of this form. ;)

Coax on back of TV (or antenna/cable, depending) to coax on adapter. RCA cables from adapter to DVD.

OK, cool, it sounds like i'll be going to Radio Shack tomorrow to pick some things up. Quick dumb question: What are those plugs called that I keep mentioning? Also, any recommendations on specific RF adapters?

Radio shack has a "standard" rf adapter. Nothing fancy, and that is just fine. I had to do this too when I got my first DVD

OK cool, unfortunately, I didn't get home tonight until well after the the shops were all closed...and I'd really like to watch a movie tonight...is there anyway I can do this with the playstation or dreamcast RF adapter I have? Any way at all? If not, I'll just have to wait til tomorrow, but...

OK, help me out here:

I have the RF adapter now (man, those things aren't cheap anymore!). It's got a yellow plug on the back for "video." There is also a yellow plug on the back of the DVD player, above the coaxial port (see diagram in first post;)). So, what should I run from one yellow plug to the other? Does it matter what color it is, or does it just have to fit?

you got an rf modulator? If so, take the component cords (red, white, yellow) and plug them into the matching color on the dvd player, then do the same on the adapter. The rest depends on whether you have a vcr and or cable box

[Edit] Here is a good example jump to page 10 and look for the similar setup (ie just vcr, vcr and cable, etc, just ignore the apex part

That would actually be composite, but the general idea's OK.

Remember you won't be able to run the DVD through your VCR, unless you have a very old VCR.

The back of the DVD player, under "Component Video output" has Red, blue, and green plugs, not red white and yellow. The RF adapater, however, has red white, and yellow. Thus the problem...

Your DVD player should also have composite output, it should be the same red/white/yellow as you have on the RF adapter.

Component is totally different, the R/G/B cables are for the video only. Audio is still handled through the red/white A/V connectors. With composite the video is handled by the yellow cable.

Just match the colors. red on rf adapter >> red on dvd player, white on rf adapter >> red on dvd player, etc. It doesn't all have to be on the same line of plugs.

Oh ok. So it doesn't matter what kind of cord, then?

For component & composite, all cables used will be the same type.

OK, well the reason I asked is because my parent's DVD player has these huge, gold-colored plugs that run from their DVD player to the TV, just wanted to make sure I didn't need those...thanks guys.

Sounds like coax, where both audio & video are transmitted through the same cable.

Yuck.

In order of video quality, best to worst:

Component
S-video
Composite
RF

The jump from composite to s-video is AMAZING, s-video to component is not nearly as impressive (at least on my 27" Wega, I suppose it could be different on a larger TV).
