If your mic hears what comes out of the speakers from what the mic originally recorded it will cause feedback (annoying scream like sound and/or echoing). I suggest use headphones to do this, so you eliminate the feedback loop.

Unmute the Microphone volume in Volume Control. Be aware that you can cause feedback if your mic picks up sound from your speakers, as Lord Banshee said.
