How can I have windoze 2k icons arranged the way I want to?

It's only a minor peeve, but I'd like to have my icons in an open window arranged in a particular fashion. I'd like all the files to be in one vertical column in a fairly wide window (about half of the monitor's width @ 1024x768). The thing is, the icons will stay in a single column if I keep the window narrow, but then that cuts off many of the file names. If I widen the window, then the file names and icons stagger off one another creating a jumble of things. Is there a program I can install or a setting in the OS that will allow me to configure the icons/filenames to my liking?
