How can i have sound in DOS games in WinXP?

I've rediscovered my classic early 90's DOS games collections like Police Quest 1, Police Quest 2, Space Quest 1, Cyber Empires, XCOM 1, Star Control 2,...

problem is, they don't play with any sound at all. How do i bring back the sound output in legacy games?

I have an SB Live! X-gamer, cambridge soundworks FPS2000 connected to the live by digital connection, and Windows XP Pro. I have the Creative WinXP driver update installed and have the "legacy devices" under the sound card tab in my device manager...

thanks

To be perfectly honest, getting an old game to work under WinXP may be more hassle than it's worth. What you could always do is to track down a really old computer (think Pentium 100) and install DOS 6.22 on that, along with all the necessary real-mode sound, mouse, and CD-ROM drivers. Then you can have a dedicated retro gaming box without the configuration hassles, plus nothing runs as stable as DOS 🙂

Such a computer would be really cheap, and you'd never have to worry about compatibility issues.

bacillus,

thanks... this may be just what i need 🙂 but, uh, how do I use it? the docs on the site is a bit sparse... it won't affect the sound and performance of my non-DOS games right?
