That's exactly what it is. Stereotypically I believe it's what young teenagers with no money for real drugs or no access to real drugs.

They didn't make a choice between empire and democracy. They were defeated by third-world civilians. Their empire crumbled in a spectacular fashion. What they were left with is at best a pseudo-democracy.



They were one of the most evil organizations to ever be set upon humanity. Would you claim that the Nazis deserve a lot more praise than criticism? Of course not, yet the British make the Nazis look like children. The British slaughtered hundreds of millions throughout the centuries and all over the world. Rare is a country that was spared British brutality.

You make good points, and as I tried to write a response with some argument that it was part colonial revolt, and part the choice under that pressure to put democracy ahead of empire, I've found I'm not pleased with that post trying to balance the issues, and so I'm going to defer responding other than that basic partial agreement.
