The latest version is crappy with ads and such and is causing a computer to keep crashing. I found older versions at oldversion.com, but what is the best way to revert back to an older version? Would installing over it work? If I uninstall the newest version, and then install the older version, would the away messages and profile be intact? I guess thats the key thing - how can I save the away messages and profile? Thanks!

edit: i currentl have 5.9.something. I'd probably go back to 5.2 i think....

Heh, I knew that was gonna come...I should have been more specific. Personally, I use Gaim....this is for my girlfriend. I'd set her up with Gaim, but I think its got just enough pecularities that it would just be easier to revert her back to a better version of AIM. Any ideas about the problems I mentioned? Any good way to save the existing settings or anything?

Yes you can save existing setting and anything from AIM, all you have to do is to save setting drop down menu and save filename to other folder and then you can delete latest aim you can install old aim and load your saved existing settings. I hope it works but I can't garuartee if the setting works with different versions.

I used to just export the entire registry entry for AIM, not sure how that would work with compatibility.. I think I was always reinstalling the same version..

Try AOL Ad Hack. It works great on the latest version of IM.

Thanks for all the info. I think I'll try exporting the settings, and then uninstall the current version and reinstall the old version. Here's hoping!

I'm going to take a complete off-the-cuff guess that using third-party programs to remove ads from AIM is against AOL's TOS.

I'm pretty sure Miranda, Trillian and GAIM don't comply with the TOS either.
