A friend has an ipad and i'd like to give some ebooks.
She's not that computer savy and was going to bring it into work and I was going to transfer them from my laptop. then I found out you have to do it in itunes.

since then calibre ( http://calibre-ebook.com/ ) has released a new version that supports the ipad but you have to change some settings on the ipad, I'm afraid that might mess things up when she is at home.

so... is there a quick easy way to give someone some ebooks without itunes?

if you JB you can add a safari downloader plugin and just download files off the net to save wherever on the ipad filesystem.

If they are .pdf's, could you just email them to here and when she opens them perhaps they will get added to ibooks?

did that add gift options in iTunes yet?

with tv shows and movies you can go in and "gift" and item to someone and pay for it and they get the info to download it to their device. I haven't checked if they got this added to the ibooks store yet.... but you have to do it through iTunes.

You could also get her Kindle books... the Kindle reader for iOS is a free download.

What about an itunes gift card? I'm pretty sure the credit applies to your account for iBooks as well.

they are epub format. I could convert them I guess. and jailbreaking is not an option here.
if I installed itunes on my laptop could I put them on the device?

I guess I need to read the latest release notes on calibre also.

There's an app I use on the iphone called "stanza". It's free(I think) so there's no reason to not give it a go. Anyway they have a PC app where you load your ebook on the program on the PC, enable sharing, and then the iphone/ipad can download it if they're on the same wifi network. Works quite well. Compatible with all sorts of formats including epub.
