How can I get pop-up Tool-Tip/Alt-Text back in Firefox?

Though I do not require it for accessibility, I use the Alt-Text mouse cursor pop-up feature in web browsers all the time. In particular, I use it when catching up on forums where I can usually preview the original post of a thread topic by hovering over it with the mouse cursor and reading the pop-up Tool-Tip text that I presume comes from the Alt-Text property of the object in the web page (I know that's what specifies what you see when hovering over an image). Firefox 9 or 10 broke this feature and I cant believe it's still broken in Firefox 11 Beta (why haven't users DEMANDED it back?!). Indeed, qwantz.com's Daily Dinosaur Comics are only half as funny if you can't read the daily image alt-text with the daily webcomic.

Chrome sucks for forums due to the fact that it doesn't support BBCODE keyboard shortcuts for adding tags like italics, underline, bold, etc, so, I have to use IE for any serious thread-pruning.

But here's the thing: IE isn't always an option and so I use Firefox Portable for a large percentage of my forum browsing anyway. It updated sometime in the last month and FIXED the alt text! I waited for the same updat to hit FF10.0.2 and it never came so I jumped to FF11 beta and found that it is still not working.

What gives? Why does it work on the latest FF Portable but not on FF proper or 11 beta? Why is it taking so long to fix?!

You might have something else going on there; maybe an addon. I'm on 13, and I don't remember it ever not working. It's not something I use a lot so I may have overlooked it, but I do use that feature.

Multiple computers, no add-ons. I went to the site and downloaded the beta but I only have 11. Where do I get 13?

Here's the thing: I just checked Firefox Portable at work and it's 10.0.2 as well. It didn't work when I first downloaded it fresh about a month or two ago but did after one of the recent updates. The fact that it's a problem on multiple computers with a fresh DL unless I'm using that one copy of FFP is interesting.

Well, even though it persisted through many browser upgrades including the jump to beta 11, toggling HWA off then on seems to have fixed it. I haven't killed the thread fully because I have a download running but it was running before disabling it restored the function. If it's still a problem after rebooting, I'll report back.

Nope. It seems that I can disable HWA without restarting the browser but I can't enable it. It seems to enable but doesn't until I restart and then the problem returns.
