How can I get past 127 GB on a Macintosh? OS/x

I'm new to mac's, and helping a friend install a 160 GB hard drive into a 400 Mhz Powermac G4 desktop. She's running OS x 10.3.6
Everything i've read says that LBA 48 is addressed already on G4's and OS 10.2, but when I booted it shows as 128 GB.

Any ideas on how to fix this? (I'd rather not go waste her money on a controller card that she doesnt need)

That's easy, install Service Pack 1 or higher

Sorry, had to say it.

its not the OS. some older macs only support up to a certain amount of hard drive space- check out the insidemacgames.com forum for more knowledgeable responses.

All I've done is put the hard drive in the rig, and it boots up showing 127GB. and then askes if I want to partition the drive any smaller.

I havent done anykind of firmware updates. (what the mobo?)

everything on the apple website shows that aslong as it is a powermacG4 it shouldnt need a controller card.
