How can I get my money?

So I'm just curious if there was anything such as a personal debt collector. I had a room mate move out after only living in the place for 4 months. He not only put us in a tough situation to find a quick replacement, he still owes me two months in utilities.

The utilities are ~$130. It's not a great deal of money but I want it back on principal at the very least. What are my options? I am in contact with him right now but I want to know the alternatives in case he just doesn't pay.

Oh good luck on that one. I had a roommate refuse to pay utilities and there was nothing management could do about it.

They told me to take her to small claims court.

Assuming you have proof and don't mind wasting time, small claims court.

I wouldn't waste my time, take it as a loss.

Depends... you're just looking at the current losses, but month over month the OP will have to pay more each month too.

It is the roommate's responsibility to try and find their own replacement if they signed a contract. But still it will look good for you if you can provide proof you started looking right away (ads on Craigslist, etc - prove you did these).

If you can't find a roommate for example for 3 months, your ex roommate could be on the hook for those months.

Again, this is still assuming he signed something saying he would stay there for a year, etc and he left early. Or you have witnesses of a verbal agreement.

And good luck with trying to collect if you win in court.

You're wasting your time over $130. Suck it up and move on. I've had several room mates over the years I either kicked out or they straight up left. A few times I've had to eat some $$$. NBD.

For $130 you need to just move on. That's not even worth the cost to show up to small claims court.
