How can I get into the trunk of my car?

I locked my keys in my truck and the spare is in the trunk of my car. I can't find the spare to the car. The service and parts departments are not open at the local dealer's on Sundays and I'm not sure I can get a locksmith out here tomorrow.

Any ideas?

You can get a locksmith out there tomorrow. It might cost more, but most should do Sundays, because people do lose their keys on a sunday :)

What type of car do you drive? Some cars have fold down rear seats with trunk access through a panel.

if you do break the window ..

break the front passenger side ..

dont try breaking the smaller ones in the back..

I heard it costs more to replace the smaller ones cuz it's so much harder to get to..

I say just call the local police and have them send someone out to SLIM JIM the passenger front side and u can pop the trunk that way

You could call the police, they have slim jims and might be able to help you. If you live on a college campus, call campus security for the same reason. Or just ask your friends, someone probably knows someone with a slim jim.

Rear seats can be usually be removed without access from the trunk.

My old camaro had a set of keys under the rear seat when I removed them for a stereo install.

On mine, you pushed in on the front of the seat, then lifted up. YMMV

I thought about the slim jim idea, but that won't help me. The trunk release is locked so I can't release it without the key.

One of my rear seats does let down, but the opening is so small that I doubt I'd be able to get to the key that way. The keys are in a suitcase in the trunk.

I'd really rather not break out the window in the truck to get to the keys.

I guess my only hope is that I can get a locksmith out here on a Sunday who can get me into the truck.

Thank you to all those who tried to help with good advice.

Edit: On second thought, I guess I could call the local state police detachment and ask if they have a slim jim that would work on the truck, but it's a 2001 model and I hear that the slim jims don't work very well on new vehicles.

Sadly I just filled out a form to get AAA through work, but hadn't sent it in yet. :(

If you have AAA they have the membership card with the plastic key. Its not supposed to be able to start the car but we jacked it from my friend once and "borrowed" his car

Goto a local street hoodum and offer him a dime bag. He'll probably even bring his own tools. For another baggies, you could probably modify all the locks and ignition to work with a screwdriver thus permanantly fixing the key problem.

I assume you can't get in the passenger compartment either, right?

Call a locksmith.

DON'T BREAK A WINDOW! You'll regret it when you end up paying 4 times what it would have cost for a locksmith, and you spend 3 days trying to get all the little peices of glass out of your car, and your stereo ends up missing as you leave your car parked outside with one window missing.

Yes, I've definitely ruled out breaking out a window. The worse that could happen is that I can't get a locksmith tomorrow and have to miss a day of work to go to the dealer on Monday and get a key made.

How about this idea? I have a sliding back window on the truck. Do you think it would be possible to slip a coat hanger or something between the glass and the latch to pop it open and then let my 6 year old niece crawl through to get the keys? Or do you think I'd just end up damaging the latch?

There are tons of mobile and part time locksmiths out there. I know a few. Just call some that are in the phone book. You shouldnt have to pay more than 30 dollars or so. You will know why when it takes him 20 seconds to pick the lock of your trunk.

Maybe wrap duct tape on the end of the wire, so you don't scratch stuff up..but I suppose it's worth a shot :)

this reminds me of an interesting story;

I have a friend and she once totally forgot about her midterm and didn't get to study so what she did was locked herself out of her car and called a locksmith to open it back up AND to write her a note saying she got locked out of her car. It bought her another two days. :D

CadetLee, thanks, the duct tape sounds like a good idea.

OS, the car is a 1992 Honda Prelude and the truck is a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 4-door. Maybe I can get the Toyota dealership to write me a note if I have to miss work to get a key on Monday. :)

nyeturo989, thanks, but I don't have On-Star.
