How can I get HD content from my laptop to TV?

I'm staying at my parent's place at the moment and would like to try watching some HD content on their big TV, but I don't know how to get it there. The TV has inputs for component and HDMI but not VGA. The laptop has a VGA and S-Video output. Is there a simple way to achieve this? They also have a DVR box and a stereo reciever attached. I can return soon with models if you need them.

Yeah I'm a HT noob :)

VGA to HDMI cable for connection, if the laptop is able to display HD content, for sound use an adapter cable that connects from the laptop headphone to the component in on the receiver.

VGA to HDMI is not a simple cable, but will require active conversation from analog to digital. So it won't be cheap. However, that's basically your only choice unless you can find a VGA to component cable for your video card/laptop. I'm not sure if your TV will accept HD over component, either.

Bah just realised the TV has a VGA input after all :D There's no reason this shouldn't be HD right? I can't test it right now.

connect the cables and set your laptops resolution to the native resolution of the TV and enjoy.

vga ports tend to be limited to something like 1024x768

This depends greatly on the display. I've had much better luck with VGA working properly to a TV than I have with DVI/HDMI. Scaling issues can be a nightmare. Several years ago I used a vga connection to my 47" 1080p westinghouse LCD LVM series with incredible results.

Regardless, all depends on the TV. Give VGA a shot, much easier than any other solution around.
