how can i get Half Life to give me the fps?

I don't think that works in Half Life. For Counter Strike its 'net_graph 4'. That shows FPS, packets in and out, and kbs in and out.

cl_showfps 1 does work in CS. Now if one wants to bench Half Life, that's a whole other ball of wax.

First, you need to patch Half Life to version 1.0.0.9, then you need to download the demo file from Planet HalfLife
