i got a 17 inch monitor thats crt...i cant seem to see the 1600 x 1200 res settings in display properties on my desktop. Also the res aint seem to be workin for any games. What are the requirements for this res.

yeah your monitor usually tells your dirvers or the drivers usually find out (one or the two lol) what resolutions your monitor supports and also what refresh rates it supports...

i lose here coz my rubbish monitor can only reliably do 1024x768 at 85hz......i tried 1280x1024 which ATI drivers say is supported and i get a out of range signal....and one the occasions where it will actually produce 1280x1024 it is in 60hz and after using 85 hz for so long....u notice it

You're monitor doesn't support that resolution. You're better off using your monitor's optimal resolution.

I too have a monitor prob.
I put my old crt to a pentium 1 of 1996 and it works on 1024*768 while it work only at 800*600 with my P4 of 2002

The DDC info is probably set wrong in the drivers; try mucking around in the advanced settings and switch it to a "Generic Monitor" rather than a specific one. That should let you select other resolutions.

Edit: That's for the post directly above mine; OP is probably screwed because old 17" CRTs likely won't support 1600x1200.

or uncheck the hide modes monitor cannot display under advanced settings in display properties, then monitor tab.
Many 17" monitors support 1600x1200, hell I have a 14" monitor from 1992 that can display 1600x1200 @ 60Hz.

14" with a res 16x12?? :Q
Do you mind me asking the model?
Anyway I wouldn't advice you to uncheck the "hide resolutions that monitor cannot display".
It could lead to a destruction of your monitor if the refresh rate or the resolution is not supported.
Also what monitor are you talking about. Lots of 17"s don't support 16x12
