How can I easily enable and unplug a device in 2000?

I have a Microtek Scanmaker X6EL with Adaptec SCSI card. I turn the scanner only on when I need it. In that case, I have to go to Device Manager and "scan for hardware changes" to get the SCSI card recognized. When I'm done I get an error message unless I go to Add/Remove Hardware and then click through too many screens to unplug the card. It's a pain in the a**.

Is there some other tweak to do this easily, or at least a way to create shortcuts directly to the appropriate boxes?

Well, W2K usualy does those things, take external modems for example.
I was pissed because I had always go to "Scan for Hardware Changes"
so it could find my modem, so now I have my modem always turned on,
and there is no problem 😉
Why don `t you leave your scanner turned on all the time ?

Many scanners can be permanently damamged if you leave them on 24/7.
My Agfa scanner is also like that, many of the internal components of desktop scanners often come with a warning specifically not to leave them on for extended periods of time.

This does depend on the specific model though, and I've no way of knowing whether it's true for hers.

I'm not sure, but I don't think Microtek recommends leaving it on all the time. I don't use the scanner enough to want to warrant that, but I still dislike having to go through so many steps to set it up - or having to reboot.
