How can I dissolve the crap left behind by a battery?

Long story short, it looks like somebody put a battery in this SLR camera a few decades ago and never removed it, and now the cover is stuck fast. How can I dissolve the crap inside and loosen the cover?
 
Baking soda and water will disolve thatfast 🙂

Oh, by the way, did you really have to start ANOTHER thread on your cheesy little camera ?
