How can I disable the AC97 codec sound option on my mobo?

I was thinking of picking-up SBLive (running Win2k) and I wanted to know if the on-board sound (AC97 codec) must be disabled physically or by simply having the new device (SBLive) detected by the OS? There appear to be no jumpers to disable the device physically.

Thanks!

I guess it all depends on what mobo you have. On my MSI K7T Turbo, I disabled onboard sound in my bios.

Is the AC97 sound option anygood? I plan on building an integrated system with this soundchip, but worried about quality. Should I go for the CT5880 chip or is the AC97 good enough? System will be used for a dorm gaming machine. (Listening to MP3s, watching VCDs, DVDs, and playing CS, UT)

If you need basic sound only, the onboard will work. If you are into gaming or quality sound then you should look at a stand alone PCI sound card. For a little bit of money, >$50, you can get a pretty decent card and for a bit more, you can get pretty much top of the line. There are new cards from Phillips and Hercules that run about $100 which are getting nice reviews.
