How can I determine whats causing Vista Ultimate 64 to hang on shutdown?

Ive been having a big problem with Vista64 Ultimate. Everytime I shut down I have a 50/50 chance of the computer actually shutting off. If it doesnt shut it off it just sits at the "shutting down" screen with the HDD activity light blinking once in a while. I also have about a 75% chance of Vista starting up as well. 25% of the time, after the Vista load bar goes away, it will just sit at a black screen doing nothing other than random HDD activity. Is there any way I can track my problem down? I should also note, that despite my system specs, Vista takes a long time to load.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

Check event viewer, it usually reports whenever there is a hang or crash. Also

> Use 'msconfig' to disable unwanted startup programs and services
> Run Windows Update
> Update Drivers and Bios (especially modem/network drivers)
> Nvidia drivers are known to cause this shutdown issues.
> Make sure ACPI/APM (Advanced Power Management) is enabled in your Bios.
> Try Disabling UAC (goto msconfig > Tools )
> Check for viruses and spyware, check if your browser is hijacked.

Edit: Scan your disc for data corruption.

Ok, Ill give that a whirl

I have discovered that a bad memory stick will do what you are describing.
Also I have heard of bad video drivers doing it to. Like ATI and nVidia.

You might try a work around...it is not a fix. You could do a force shutdown.

Go to Run and type in shutdown /s/f/t 00

Don't forget that Vista keeps a record of all software installs. You can compare when your troubles began with when you installed various software and add-ins.

Ok, I check event viewer & I do have a number of critical errors. The two errors that always happen are event 10111(the device flash HS-CF is offline due to a user mode driver crash) & event 10110(a problem has occurred with one or more user-mode drivers & the hosting process has been terminated).

Any insight on these events?

Well, this error has got something to do with your usb devices, unplug your usb devices like mobile phone, cam, flash drives, head phones and see if the problem persists, try updating the drivers.

I disconnected my monitor's usb ports from my computer & so far so good. The usb connection on my monitor is for additional usb ports & several memory card slots.
