How can I confirm that my receiver is dead? Part 2...came back and died again!

Hi guys. I've had an Onkyo receiver I've been using for the past few years. Last night I turned it off (I usually leave it idle) and when I turned it off this morning I couldn't get sound out of it. I've tried playing audio through all 3 optical inputs and with the subwoofer unplugged as well and was unable to get sound from any of the 3 sources (pc, xbox, macbook pro). I was able to get some white noise out of the speakers when I changed the input to fm (no antennae). Now based on what we're seeing here, how can I determine if this unit is kaput?

disconnect it from everything and try adding one speaker at a time. also check the manual for a factory reset procedure.

Sounds like something is wrong with the chip that does the routing of the sounds through the preamp. That can be a part of the main controller chip or external depending on the design. If you got sound out of it from FM then the amp part is fine, it just isn't getting signal from the preamp on other connections. You really need a schematic to know how the audio is routed and determining how to fix it.

try a analog input not just the digital ones. If you are hearing white noise then your amplification seems to be ok.

Since nobody else has suggested it I'll throw out an obvious one - Have you disconnected it from power yet? I've had a receiver seemingly lose its brains like you described, after unplugging it for a while it has worked fine since.

I had an issue with an Onkyo receiver where the sound just cut out (might have been hissing a bit) while watching TV - video was still being displayed. I just pulled the plug on the receiver, waited a few minutes, plugged it back in and it's been fine ever since (this was about two years ago when it was fairly new).

Check the headphone jack .... I had an issue with a different (not Onkyo) reciever about 10 years ago ... problem was a short in the headphone jack ... once that was fixed it worked great again.

This is what I was going to say. Pretty much any electronic component today is just like a computer....sometimes they need a hard reset.

My B&K HT preamp has needed this a couple of times. Pull the power cord for a minute, plug it in and it might be okay.

Hi guys. Thanks for all the great tips. So last time this happened it fixed itself the next morning....and it happened again 2 days ago. For some reason the analog inputs work but not the digital ones....what gives???? I already tried reassigning the inputs digital to tape/cd/dvd.
