How can I check what RPM my hard drive runs at?

I have a Dell dimension 4100 but I just purchased a new case, mobo, ram, processor and power supply. I would like to use my old hard drive with it but I don't know what RPM it is.

Is there any way to find out. I am running windows 2000.

Also would I have to reformat my hard drive if I want to use my old hard drive with my new computer?

Easiest way is to plug the model number into Google. Some benchmark utilities like Sisoft Sandra or HDTach might also be able to programmically determine it.

You don't have to reformat the old drive if you don't want to.

Most of the drive mfrs have downloadable diagnostics for their drives and they will usually put the ID info from the drive's firmware on the screen for you.
Perhaps some of the commercial diagnostics packages can actually check the rpm, I'm pretty sure that SpinRite from www.grc.com does, but it's expensive.

Go to my computer and right click on a hard drive and click properties. Click on the hardware tab and all the applicable hardware with model numbers will be listed. Google the number and see what comes up.

download aida32 LINKAGE its a great freeware program that will do basically the same stuff as sandra (in giving you information that is, not benchmarking)
