The only way is for do a format and reinstall. NTFS is supposed to be faster on a HD larger then 400mb or so. You also can set file permissions instead of just share permissions. The next time I format, I'm probably going to pass on reinstalling 98SE, so I'll probably switch to NTFS partitions at that point.

NTFS provides file level security where FAT16 and FAT32 do not provide any security whatsoever. However, this comes with a little overhead. But not so much that you would see the chugging that you indicated. In addition the file system used by the hard drive has nothing to do with the CD-ROM file system... that has its own: CDFS.

You say you did not have this issue when running FAT32? Was that with a different OS as well? It sounds as though you've just switched.

When was the last time you defragged the hard drive. This is something that needs to be done regardless of the file system in use. Severe fragmentation will cause slow downs when attemptin to do read/write operations. This is true for NTFS, FAT16, or FAT32.

oh yeah, if you really do wish to move from NTFS to FAT32, this can be done with third party software like Partition Magic as narciarz has suggested

How much RAM is in your system and is you page file big enough. Win2K works a little different than Win98.
