How can I boot into DOS?

MichaelD

On my main rig, the "hive" or registry has become corrupted/too large. W2K will not load ( I get a BSOD right after the splash screen. To top it off, I have no ESD's...a lesson painfully learned; you can bet I'll make them next time. 🙁

I want to try to boot into DOS to see if I can copy some stuff from my RAID 0 array (where 2K is) to my backup HD, which is in the same case/attached to mobo.

How can I do this? Thanks.

are you booting to a floppy?

There is no DOS in NT/2K/XP

anyway you should be able to use a DOS disk to boot up to a FAT16/32 Partition, not sure about NTFS

NTFS DOS has been one of my biggest lifesavers. I do not know if Promise offers DOS drivers.

Hope this is a step forward for you Michael.

Dude, the DOS operating system fits on a floppy. You can download it at http://www.bootdisk.com.

Then you just boot from the floppy, and DOS is running.

Mind you, DOS cannot read NTFS, so if your HD is NTFS, you will not be able to work with those files while you are in DOS.

Thanks a lot, guys! Please explain about "recovery console." Do you mean boot of the W2K CDR, and try recovery from there? I tried that and it tells me "cannot find W2K installation." I only tried it once though....Maybe try again? Any additional help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

I have one thing on my mind for this next install; Emergency Recovery Discs A phrase to live by! Too bad I said "bah, I'll never need those dumb things!" Now who is dumb? me\<-----is a very BIG dumbass.

<< You can make bootdisks to get into the recovery console. >>

And wait a half hour it takes to boot from four floppies or just boot from your Win2K cd and go strait into the recovery console.

The emergency disk is not much. All it really contains is basic W2K files excluding the kernel which is too big to fit on a disk. It also contains the SAM database which contains passwords to get into your systems. There are still other ways. all you need is a command prompt which NTFS DOS can get you. To install the recovery console, launch teh following like this "WINNT32 /cmdcons" It will then allow you to login from the command line.

See how far you can get with that. From there a variety of things can be tried.

[soapbox] BTW, Many people with paper certs (NT4 in particular comes to mind) tends to leave these hanging around thinking its another floppy. [/soapbox]

Thanks Winston,

How do I get to a prompt to type what you say? From the W2K CD? Thanks very much for your help. 🙂
