How can I best sell my monitor?

Muse

Lifer
I started doing some eBay selling a couple months ago, but I'm hesitant to put my NEC FP2141SB-BK 22" (20" viewable) monitor on eBay for fear that it won't sell for what it's worth. New, this sells for more than $600. There's a version that includes the SpectraView Color Calibration Solution that costs >$500 more, but mine's not that. Mine's like this, or here.

I got it about two years ago, used it moderately but haven't used it for 1.5 years, since getting my 19" LCD.

I know I can have high starting bid or a hidden reserve price, but haven't done anything like that and wonder anyway if doing that is smart in this case.

I don't see any of this model selling on eBay. I'd appreciate any tips on how I can go about selling it with some confidence that I'll get a fair price. Thanks.

Yo, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth (formerly Metallica, but that's another story!!!). I thought of selling it here in the FS/FT forum. Then I guess I don't have to post a price but can just sort of discuss price or bargain with people. I'm not sure how I'd best handle that. Get a figure from someone and tell them I'd like to wait a few weeks and see if I find a better price (assuming it isn't about what I'd be happy selling it for)?

If you do sell here, you MUST post a price per the rules(unless the item is strictly for trade only). Nothing wrong with starting the price high and seeing what kind of response you get😉
I think you will have much better luck here. There are some very fine individuals over on the FS/FT forums😀

You are best off trying to find a local buyer or selling it on the FS/T forum here.

You also have to be reaslisitc of what you expect to get for it. Monitors are notoriously bad a holding their resale value.

How much you looking for ball park.. this is quite a Heavy item for shipping... so shipping might drive price up drastically...

depends on price and what shipping would push price to...

What's it like selling on Craigslist? I check it out for job listings, but have only checked out for sale stuff very briefly and quite a while ago.

Hmm. I check out FS/FT Forum a few days ago, looking at monitors and saw a post and the guy didn't mention price at all. I suppose he was supposed to, huh? But he didn't.

I think shipping would be around $60, minimally, based on what I've seen at eBay. I'm in Berkeley, CA, BTW. I guess I'd be OK with $350 + shipping.

It weighs around 77 lb. boxed, I think. I have the original box and packing materials.

If you sell on Craigslist, be aware of scams where people offer to pay you more than it's worth to ship it overseas. Or pay you via a money order/cashiers check that's for more than you're asking and wire them the difference.

You'll end up with a fake cashiers check and out a monitor and your own cash.

You may already know better, but I've heard Craigslist is a hotbed for these scams

I doubt you'll get what you're looking for. There are tons of NICE 19-22" CRT's listed on craigslist for less than 100 dollars that don't sell. CRT's don't exactly hold their value well.

On a good day, the Dell's 20 inch LCDs going for 498 plus tax in some states, selling your CRT for what you feel its worth is going to be pretty difficult in FS/FT forums. Unless you do as the others suggest, local pick up and be realistic on CRT pricing etc.

Yeah, I think I'll go for local pickup. Somebody can come to my house, I suppose, check out the display before we make a deal. I know one thing, this same display is selling for over $600, plus shipping right now. Mine, with 6 months of light usage should be worth more than $100. As well, it's still in warranty, at least for me (3 year).

Yeah, I wasn't aware of that stuff. Thanks.

Good luck getting even $400 for that.
Nowaday, CRT has lost its appeal especially with LCD prices dropping.
Think about it, for $500, you want to get a bulky 22" CRT or sleak 20" LCD, it's really a no brainer.
Take your loss and get yourself a nice 20" LCD.

That's evidently discontinued and a 19" monitor, quite a bit smaller than mine. If you can find it, it's selling for maybe half of what mine's going for, at least it is at this site.

I totally dig what you are saying. I'm looking at a 19" LCD right now, and another (different brand) should arrive in a week or two for a dual display. Thing is, I just couldn't see doing dual display with an LCD and a CRT, so I haven't been using the CRT at all. LCD prices have been so high I didn't want to invest in a second for dual display until the prices came down and I just found the display I hope will work for me, the Hyundai L90D+. I don't want a 20" LCD because I don't want a native res of 1600 x 1200. I like my 1280 x 1024. Never used 1600 x 1200 on an LCD, but I figure print would just be too tiny for my taste.

I don't game, so the CRT is of no special use to me. However, this NEC is highly reputed for graphics and I suppose it's pretty much optimal for gaming. Yes, the LCD's are getting more and more attractive. I realize I may not get a lot of money for the NEC, but I hate to just give it away. They are for sale for $600-700 new right now. This would definitely work for somebody, it's just finding that somebody that's the problem for me. I think I'll post here in FS/FT, and maybe on Craigslist. Don't think I want to mess with eBay on this one.

Forget eBay if you don't have original packaging.

If you do:
shipping coast to coast is ~$50
I researched your monitor and its shipping weight is 78lbs.
FedEx Home Delivery maximum weight is 70 lbs. UPS

UPS can delivery it, but they're more expensive

Do a ten day auction in a category that caters mainly to people who wants a CRT that big (professionals) and set a reserve price to the minimum price you're willing to sell for start at that price.

Thanks. I do have the original packaging. You say I could ship it for $50, coast to coast? That's what service?

FedEx Ground to a commercial address. According to their site, they will not accept shipments over 70 lbs for delivery to a residential address.
