i rma'd a quantum hdd and maxtor replaced it with a refurb maxtor. it has a second sticker on top of the original, and it SAYS it's a 7200 rpm drive, but it sure SEEMS alot slower than my old quantum. does anyone know how i can determine the speed of my drive? if not the spin speed, the read/write speed would be nice (possibly even nicer, but i'd need to know what the r/w speed for a 7200 rpm drive should be.)

Use either CLIBENCH or SISoft Sandra to measure the read/write speed of your hard drive. I like CLIBENCH since I can see the CPU usage to determine if DMA is enabled or not. If your CPU usage is around 80% or higher, DMA is off. If it is around 10% or lower, DMA is one, which in turn is about 3-4 times faster read/writes than if it was off.
