Settings --> Control Panel --> Mouse --> Hardware --> Select your device, click Properties, and then go under Advanced Settings...

Are you using a USB or PS/2 connection? The refresh rate of the mouse can't be changed if you are using the USB port. The sample rate of USB is locked at 125 samples per second.

It's a matter of personal preference. As I stated previously, the sample rate of USB is hardware locked at 125 samples/second, while the PS/2 connection can be maxed out at 200 SpS. Some people claim that using it on the USB feels more smooth, but I honestly can't tell a difference between the USB at 125 and PS/2 at 200 on my Logitech MX500.

FYI, I use the PS/2 with my MX500 - no need to use a USB slot when the PS/2 port will do.... :)

You do save an IRQ by using the USB port. If plugged into the mouse PS/2 port, the mouse will use an IRQ address all by itself. If your short on IRQ's, the USB will free one up.
