i got 5mpbs down / 480kbps up from comcast for $20/month through comcast. no contract.

also, i don't have a phone line through verizon, so i'd have to sign up for that.

Hmm I was paying $65.00 a month then for 144/144 iDSL. It was the only "broadband" I could get.

Post back with some speed tests after you are up and running. You wouldn't be the first person to sign a contract with DSL and get stuck with a year of sh*tty speed.

CO or RT and then there's also relative capacity. Yeah DSL is pretty nasty.

You're lucky to have options.. For me only broadband option is Charter cable (3000/256 for $50). Just a mile away from where I live though Comcast service area (6000/768 for $50). I want Verizon FIOS but they wont be coming to Georgia with Bellsouth here.

I like blanket statements everyone puts out there, every situation is different as to which is better for you, depending on the company and the location. For me DSL blows away comcast, comcast was very unreliable for me. SBC 6000/608 was pretty good for me for $45 a month, and also faster then anything comcast offers. But overall I decided I didnt need that fast honestly, and switched to 3/512 for $25 a month, a full $20 lower then comcast wanted, for 1mbit slower download, but a faster upload.

Comcast is increasing the download speed this month.

Comcast subscribers automatically will be upgraded to 6 Mbps for free, so long as they also are cable customers. Those who want to get the fastest connection will have to pay $10 more a month

Comcast Cable
4 mb down / 384 kb up
$42.95 a month
I had to buy my own modem, otherwise +$3 a month for lease.

Verizon DSL
3 mb down / 768 kb up
$29.95 a month + additional $10 off for first three months

Absolutely no cost and hassle for me to switch
Free Modem/Wireless router for me to keep after one year.
No activation charge, no set up fee
No charge on shipping above router
No truckroll or in-house appointment, they simply turn it on through my phoneline. (I hated Comcast's truckrolls and workers coming in my house with dirty shoes & making a mess everywhere.)

How can Comcast compete with this?!?

you have to have a phone line which runs about 30+ bucks per month...
its about the same..

so its not that great a deal...
where cable its 44 bucks flat... and i dont need a home phone.
